Chapel Hill - Life Get Started

After a week adjusting different lifestyle here in Chapel Hill, we've been following the pace with its peace and harmonious. Life seems more than simple and regular--jogging in the early morning, making breakfast, going to campus by bus, having classes in both morning and afternoon, discussing and working together with the dinner, blogging... Lei says she's more like to have a grandma's daily life, so do we.



The Weather

It seems so changeable, the difference in temperature at night and noon is also big. Yesterday the lowest temperature was -3 degree but the highest temperature today is above 18 degree. But fortunately warm enough indoors, no need to be aware of dressing.


I can't even figure out which season it belongs to: fall, winter or early spring?



The Food

Usually, we make breakfast, lunch and also dinner together by our own. Permutation and combination of food materials proceed to make dishes no second same taste. But for only several food stocked in the refrigerator, there could be more choices to make. We've got these dishes of this weekdays:

• sliced pork lib with carrot in curry sauce
• fry pork piece with celery
• roast chicken
• chicken soup
• lettuce with dried shrimp
• tilapia in soy sauce
• tilapia soup
• scramble eggs in sweet and sour sauce
• fried rice with apple dice

Making dishes together should be quite exciting and impressive, maybe we'll hold a banquet for our classmates after coming back.

The Courses

We've got four courses all considering multimedia theories and practice, so it is required to have classes in computer lab all the time. There's a lot of homework and projects and designs to cover this semester, reviewing's also a prior work. We might be able to have a basic view of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign till the end of this month.

Technical Worker To BE!

Prof.Richard Beckman selected 12 credits for us by all means, which may totally turning us technical workers after these courses finished:

• Interactive Multimedia Narratives by Richard Beckman
• Theory and Practice of Multimedia Design by Laura Ruel
• Documentary Multimedia Storytelling by Richard Beckman
• 3D Design Studio by Alberto Cairo

According to his suggestions, we should learn several complicated softwares and be in the school lab most of the weekdays, or there wouldn't be chances to get higher score. Poor girls, they're even more fatigue than I am with these sophisticated buttons and instructions and level-by-level menus. Anyway, we're trying to figure out if changing courses is feasible.

Tour Around UNC-CH

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public, coeducational, research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. Also known as The University of North Carolina, UNC-CH, or simply UNC, is the oldest institution in the University of North Carolina System. Although not the first public university to be chartered, it was the first to open to students, and the only public university in America to graduate students in the eighteenth century. Academically, the University is among the United States' best, consistently ranking in the top five public universities in the nation.

Statue of Silent Sam

Erected in 1913 as a monument to the 321 alumni of the University who died in the Civil War and all students who joined the Confederate Army, this statue is known by students as Silent Sam.



The Old Well

The most enduring symbol of the university is the Old Well, a small neoclassical rotunda based on the Temple of Love in the Garden of Versailles, at the spot of the original well that provided water for the school. It stands at the south end of McCorkle Place, the northern quad, between two of the campus's oldest buildings, Old East and Old West. There is a symbolic drinking fountain (providing city water) at the center of the rotunda so that one can "drink from the Old Well" for good luck. It is tradition for entering freshmen to drink from the well, and the superstition is that if one does this, one will make all "As" that semester.



Dudley Dewitt Carroll Hall

Carroll Hall, which is on the west side of Polk Place between South Building and Wilson Library, was named after Dudley Dewitt Carroll, founder of the School of Commerce, later named the Kenan-Flagler Business School. It was completed in 1953, and an addition that wraps around the original building was completed in 1971.
